DVD drive AWOL
I will try hooking up the CD player to the sound card. I never had any intentions of playing music CDs from the drive so I didn't connect it. Have you tried a CD or DVD in your dvd/cd drive? I assume this is the hardware you're referring to http://www.bytewizecomputers.com/products/7/3/4/1472 (sound card) and

WAnt a cheap Mac not made by Apple but Core?
I didn't install the whole enclosure yet to see if it would work first. I didn't want to stick the hard drive and floppy drive enclosure back in before I knew it would work. The hard drive says Samsung SV4002H, and the DVD drive says DVD/CD-R LITE-ON LTR-52327S, so they are mentioned by manufacturer.

OEM Win98SE vs. Full Retail Version Win98SE
I'm not surprised that I couldn't get it to work. Each time I mounted the files on a virtual dvd/cd drive with Daemon Tools. Nothing worked. Wouldn't install at all and there didn't even seem to be any kind of setup exe file, nothing. Why did you try something that nobody else does and not do what everybody else

KG7-RAID + W2K Install = Boom
Well, you might do a search in the registry for the upperfilters and lowerfilters for the drive. Some programs muddle around there and can cause problems. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 What I did to get it working was to add a CD burner on the secondary IDE cable. The registry information didn't work but

You might be asking why I didn't load the CD drivers...well...my Sony DVD/CD drive hadn't arrived by that point. DVDR drive and DVD/CD volume label problem. Please Help.
You said you've got a Maxtor and a Seagate disk, but you didn't say anything about your CDROM. If it's attached as the primary-slave drive it might be what's causing the timeouts on the primary-master drive. Is it an ATAPI CDROM drive? Or is it perhaps an ATAPI DVD/CD drive? What brand and model?

They replaced the DVD/CD drive but it came back still freezing. A few people here feel I've no right to complain but I'ma senior, living on disability, They didn't lose any money telling me about the ram. I used that to buy Panther for this machine, my maxed out G4 sawtooth. So, bad system install plus iffy ram

Windows/Linux dual booting
I'm on an Imac G4, which otherwise runs well. Or did. Summarily I can neither back-up nor use the install disc. I don't know if it's a drive problem ,or a screwed-up-system problem, due to the QT over-write. Any help would be appreciated. If I need a new dvd or cd drive, any suggestions on a decent inexpensive one?

motherboard failure? Confusing symptoms.
The computer recognised the drive and is reading CD and DVD successfully and writing CD successfully (infact as I write this I have the first CD I burned with the new drive playing You were right that I had disconnected the power cable when I went under the hood - so to speak - last night. and didn't notice it.

The system also has a floppy and and DVD/CD drive; I booted off the latter. fdisk /dev/hda when I shelled out reported it couldn't find the device. It's a new machine. The Win98 install hung up before I got to format the partition. Not sure win98 supports drives that big. Quite sure it doesn't actually.

XB360's DVD drive should have been modular...
DVD/CD drive: just works. Stuff that doesn't work: Modem: it's a softmodem. No joy there. I don't mind though since I happen to have a standard PCMCIA modem card. I sort of expected this (suspend didn't work on my previous laptop either) and I'm not really that broken up about it. Special volume control keys:

Yeah, there were a few machines out there with XP, but I didn't want to buy an os with a machine attached to it. When I installed it, I didn't remember to change it to SLAVE since I have a DVD/CD drive in the first port. So both drives were at MASTER, (is that really bad? The problem is that if I right click the either drive, a Fatal error occurs. If I install the CD-R burning software, and double click to use it,
